What Can You Not Put in a Skip Bin

  • Skip Bins

If you need to remove a large amount of waste from your property, whether a home or a business, there’s no better way than skip bin hire in Perth. But because of their reputation as the complete solution to any waste problem, it can be tempting to throw anything and everything into a skip.

But the truth is that there are certain things that can’t be thrown into a skip bin in Perth. Let’s take a look at the offending materials and the reasons why they can’t be grouped with the other waste.

Chemicals

Hazardous liquids, including oils, paints, pesticides and poisons, must not be thrown in a skip, even if they’re in perfectly sealed containers. The reasons for this are three-fold:

• The chemicals are dangerous enough by themselves, and becoming even more so if they mix with each other, potentially damaging the skip.
• The chemicals are toxic to landfill and may contaminate groundwater if not properly disposed of.
• The presence of hazardous chemicals puts anyone nearby – including our staff – in danger.

If the container shows a hazardous material label, the material needs to be set aside and processed separately.

Tyres
- Tyres are difficult to process and are best dealt with by specialist tyre recyclers. Putting tyres in your skip is wasteful, as all the contents of a skip are sent directly to landfill! You can help save the planet – and save some room in your skip – by putting tyres aside and giving them to a recycler who can repurpose them.

Asbestos - Much like hazardous chemicals, the presence of asbestos in your skip puts those nearby, particularly our staff, in danger. A licenced asbestos removalist must be employed to remove the material (unless you’re removing less than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos). But don’t worry – if you need help with the disposing of asbestos, just ask, and we can process it separately.

Food - To protect our staff and guard against the potential for landfill contamination, we do not accept any food in our skips. Why not give back to the earth by putting your food waste in a green bin or on a compost heap instead?

Human or animal waste - For the same reasons as above, you cannot put human or animal waste in a skip. It can be detrimental to the environment, particularly groundwater, and can be dangerous for anyone working with or near the skip. Once again, a green bin or compost heap is a wonderful alternative!
